It is not known whether the district takes its name from the farm or vice versa, the fact is that it is a true jewel located within an extraordinary centuries-old olive grove. The Conghia, or Conchia, farm, which is accessed via a dirt road between the olive trees until you find yourself in front of a mighty monumental entrance portal with mighty surrounding walls, was part of the possessions of the Palmieri family, one of the most important noble families of Monopoli, whose family crest is found in high relief right in the body of the structure.
The farm, which still retains its original state of use, tells of a time gone by, of a world in which nobles and peasants lived in the same place without meeting. The only common space between the owners and the peasants was the well, for everything else the two worlds did not meet, even in the eighteenth-century church where the “lords” attended mass on a balustrade separate from the rest of the room. In the church there is a beautiful wooden altar with a depiction of the nativity and a statue of Saint Nicholas that is said to come from the nearby Monte San Nicola, belonging to the farm itself, where the cattle still graze today. The structure of the farm is very imposing, with two entrances, one upstream and the other downstream, and the courtyards, the hypogeum, and the farmhouses are still visible.
A beautiful, scenic staircase, in Baroque style, allows access to the main entrance located under a machicolation with bell gables. The structure, in addition to the machicolations and loopholes, also has cylindrical sentry boxes among its defensive structures. Going down into the hypogeum, there is a Marian representation, as well as inside the cave itself. In the center of the square, instead, there is a sculptural representation of the landing of the Madonna della Madia, almost as if to recall the link with the urban nucleus. We can date the farmhouse back to 1600, while the church is from the eighteenth century.
